Biggles

"staying in the dark with the willies growing every minute."

...Day Of The Triffids. Swear to God, that's the line I just opened the book at. It's a curse, I tell you. *dies*

Was I the only one that wanted looting!Eddie Izzard to break the shop window and steal a dress? Really? Oh, please yourselves...

My main hope for part two is that Dougray Scott will find a second expression. Too much to ask? You may well think so.

JM - Wing Commander

Algy, who had heard that tone of voice before, quivered instinctively in anticipation of the action

[info]rhosyndu - the third Investigator was Bob Andrews. Is that what I said? All I can remember is you laughing at whatever I suggested...

Anyway, on another note, random googling of other teenage-years-books leads me to the discovery of the title "Tom Swift and His Big Tunnel" which trumps anything Biggles can offer, I fancy. Oooh, or "Tom Swift and His Great Oil Gusher". *sporfles*

...OMG, Franklin W Dixon doesn't actually exist. I'm going to stop now before I discover anything else upsetting. Or before I succumb to the temptation of looking for Hardy Boys slash. Or Hal/Roger incest slash. Or... Oh bloody hell I had to look up Nancy Drew didn't I? Carolyn Keene doesn't exist either. Is nothing from my childhood real?

....Frances K. Judd (Kay Tracey books, which I'd forgotten about until I saw the link) apparently isn't real either. I feel sullied and unusual. And not in a good way.

(Incidentally, this is apparently post number 1,001. Why yes, this would have been more relevant had I noticed while posting the last one. Ho hum.)

Biggles

"Biggles had succeeded in getting off"

Sunshine! *bounces*. 'Twas supposed to be grim today I think, but it's lovely. Have just been into town, where I had a good nose through the charity shops and bookshops (haul: Neil Gaiman - M Is For Magic. Sadly no Biggles, bah), bought some stuff in Tragos (despite vowing never to darken their doors again when they ripped me off last time. What can I say, I'm a sucker for cheap stationery) and was amused by the car that drove past containing four blokes dressed as bananas. And I'm talking full-body banana suits here. WTF?

Hmmn, now I could do some housework, or I could open a bottle of wine. Whaddaya reckon?

Right. If, say, I was going to read Biggles, what would be a good one to start with?

Biggles

Has your mother sold her mangle?

I am of the opinion that no matter how bad your mood, seeing a book in a shop window entitled "Biggles Takes It Rough" will improve your day immeasuably (he was even on all fours on the cover. I kid you not). *glee*

See? :D

In other news, fucking Tragos have just stiffed me out of £5. I bought some stuff that should have come to about £6, handed over the money and then realised he'd just said something like £19! So I spluttered a bit, whereupon rather than just re-doing my six items he made me go and see the refund man, who scratched his head, looked at my items, said "I can't work this out," went back to the till, got a load of receipts, scratched his head a bit more, made me fill in a fucking form with my name and address, then what felt like hours later gave me some cash. Which, having got home and worked it out, was about £5 not enough. Fuckers.

/rant.

...I was so thrown by the whole evil shopping experience I was forced - forced I tell you - to go into the pub and have a pint.

J/J glasses

Why, why, whyyyyyyyy?

Have I got "Delilah" stuck in my head? *g*

Also, why did the weather see fit to present a monsoon-type downpour *just* at the minute I left work? On the other hand, it did result in the most mahoosive rainbow.

In other news, I has a package from Amazon, yay! I have To Dream Of The Dead and, er, I also bought
The Back Passage, purely because the synopsis made me laugh...
A seaside village, an English country house, a family of wealthy eccentrics and their equally peculiar servants and a determined detective - all the ingredients are here for a cosy Agatha Christie-style whodunnit. But, Edward "Mitch" Mitchell is no Hercule Poirot, and "The Back Passage" is no "Murder on the Orient Express". Mitch is a handsome, insatiable 22-year-old hunk who never lets a clue stand in the way of a steamy encounter, whether it's with the local constabulary, the house secretary, or his school chum and fellow athlete Boy Morgan, who becomes his Watson when they're not busy boffing each other.

...Boy Morgan? *cracks up*

Bloody cheek! A random cat has just chased one of mine right in through the catflap. I cornered it in the kitchen, whereupon it leapt onto the windowsill and yowled indignantly at me. I opened the back door, and it legged it, knocking a vase and plant off the windowsill in the process. Bastard.

Anyway, have a literary!meme nicked from Azzy...

1. Choose, by random means if at all possible, ten books that you have read recently.
2. Post the first sentences of every book in your journal and invite your f'list to guess at the title and author of the book.

I confess I picked ones I thought you might have actually read, as opposed to the ones I've read recently... )

So I discover that there's a new Anita Blake book out, and true to recent form it sounds awful (and true to my own recent form I'll probably buy it anyway) - but the synopsis on Amazon just made me crack up...

--
Jason is a werewolf. He's also one of Anita Blake's best friends and sometimes her lover. And right now he needs her - not to be a vampire hunter, or a federal marshal, or a necromancer, but because his father is dying. Anita can make him look like an everyday guy, helping him say good-bye to the abusive father he never loved. The fact that Jason is not 'everyday' and Anita is far from being just a pretty woman is something they figure they can keep under wraps for a couple of days in a small town. How hard can that be?

"Has he come out?"

Finally! I got to see the Have I Got News For You with James May! *pets him* Was glad (and rather amused) that they weren't horrid to him like they always are to Jeremy.

Question: Is it rather tragic to borrow a set of dvd's from a friend because you can't actually wait for the ones you've ordered to arrive before you watch it again? Yes, probably. Also, it's probably bad to be rooting for the forces of law and order when watching Robin of Sherwood isn't it? Again, yes.

Anyway, I appear not to have updated for a couple of days, so what other exciting things have I been up to? cut to avoid boring them'ses not interested )

ETA: I have finally seen the last episode of Life on Mars! Just in time for the new one to begin LOL

"The playing of the merry organ"

The Holly and the Ivy is one of my favourite carols for various reasons, despite the fact I can only ever remember about 2 lines of it. It's in The Children of Greene Knowe, which is always something to re-watch at Christmas, and Sweet Singing In The Choir was a short story in my favorite book of fantasy stores when I was little. Oh yeah, and it's incredibly pagan LOL. So imagining James singing it makes me spaz happily. I fully intended to download the one he recommended, but in the end I preferred the arrangement of the St Paul's one, sorry James LOL

In other news:

Thank you [info]beckstar2 for your card!

And last but definitely by no means least I HAZ A CERI BOOK! Arrived this morning, An Anatomy Of Chester, short-short stories, including one by our very own [info]thinkpink20! Which is, obviously, feckin' amazing.

Went out intending to buy the new Phil Rickman book this morning - completely failed to find a copy, but DID find the new Rebus, which I didn't know was out yet, and also a new 'Young Bond' book which I didn't know was out either - and it's signed by Charlie Higson - yay! [/over-excited]

Oh, and here, have James from today's Telegraph:
